About GENOBIA
License #: GEORGIA LPC 003886When I was a child, my mother taught me a poem called “Children Learn What They Live.” It had a big influence on me – so much so that I knew at age 15 that I wanted to work with kids. Then, when I was 20, my brother died. I was a junior in college, coming home for Christmas break, when the unimaginable happened. That tragedy affected me profoundly, igniting a passion for turning life’s lemons into lemonade. So, I changed my major from education to psychology. I had a mission: to help people who are suffering but don’t know how to change it. After earning my undergraduate degree in psychology, I was accepted to the University of Florida Graduate College of Education. I decided to focus on mental health counseling because of my experiences with those struggling with mental health. Eventually, my family and I moved to Atlanta. There, I began counseling children, teens, and families, first in an inpatient and then in a partial-hospitalization setting. I became licensed as a Professional Counselor in Georgia; I was promoted to Lead Therapist and then to Program Manager. I later shifted my career to school counseling, and school became my home for 15 years! I honed my career counseling skills to guide my students through the most difficult part of life: high school. Outside the office… I’m married to the love of my life, and we’ve been blessed to have raised two daughters. We’re now empty-nesters, enjoying travel, nature, and activities with our dog, October.

My Therapeutic Approach
I use a range of modalities with my clients, depending on their developmental stage and issues. For example, I would probably use play therapy or expressive therapy techniques with children. Motivational interviewing and strength-based approaches usually work well with teens. Dialectical-behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, or solution-focused approaches may be used with adults, depending on their needs.
Who I Help Best
Seismic shifts occur right beneath our noses. How did the confident child become a teenager who is insecure, withdrawn, and angry? It’s hard to know what “normal” behavior is… Sometimes, as a parent, you don’t have an objective look at the situation. Sometimes, the expectations are so different from how you were raised. Sometimes, they challenge you in ways you never did. Sometimes, you aren’t ready to accept what they are experiencing. This is where I come in. We'll use a variety of techniques, which could include games, expressive therapy, journaling, role play… What I see most frequently are anxiety, depression, family issues, school issues, or behavioral issues. I want to know what the goal of the client is. This helps the goal to be achievable. We can hone the goals together. Most of the time, teen clients are open to learning new strategies in therapy. They understand “therapy” and even seek out counseling on their own! Helping to recognize the unique strengths each brings, and refining a plan that capitalizes on those strengths. Finding a voice that is respectful, confident and their own. I maximize the time that we have!
What a First Session Is Like
I take a targeted approach to therapy. During the first two or three sessions, you will be in the “exploration stage.” During this time, you’ll get comfortable clarifying the problems that have brought you to counseling, and I will learn more about your story. After that, you may be in the “planning stage,” where you’ll develop a plan for change. We’ll solidify your goals, make sure they’re within reach, and I’ll give you strategies to get there. A month or so into therapy, you may be in the “action stage.” Here, you’ll take concrete steps to achieve lasting change. We’ll continually adjust what’s working and what’s not. Once you have met your goals, you can stop sessions or address a different area of concern. If we need to go beyond three months of therapy, we should revise our treatment goals to meet you where you are.
