About Marilee

License #: 206066

I’m Marilee, and as your counselor, I bring a lifetime of learning and experience with relationships to the counseling room. I am passionate about the marriage relationship and I know how critical it is to individual and family well-being. But relationships can be hard, even with the people you love.. I recognize the pain that comes from when our reality doesn't meet our expectations, and I love helping clients see new possibilities for their relationship. In addition to counseling, I have a Masters of Science in Family Studies and am an adjunct professor in the Educational Psychology department at the University of North Texas. Along with Parenting and Child Development, my favorite course to teach is Courtship & Marriage which focuses on relationships, and how they thrive when they are based on a foundation of trust, commitment, good communication, repair skills, and grace. It is this course which ultimately inspired me to pursue a second master's degree in Marriage & Family Therapy. Married for more than 3 decades, I am mom to four 'grown and flown' kids and “Rara” to 5 grandchildren whom I adore. When I’m not at work I enjoy pickleball, paddleboarding, home renovation, travel and spending time with friends and family.

My Therapeutic Approach

I'm here to help you function better in your most important relationships. Relationships are challenging, and they stretch us in ways that often do not feel great. I work with couples and individuals experiencing relationship challenges to help you find your connection again. I have an eclectic approach to counseling -Since no two people are exactly the same, I am committed to using the best evidence-based therapeutic modality that best suits the individual(s) in front of me. My work is grounded in attachment-based and relational approaches to counseling. This means we focus on: Emotional safety and connection, Understanding each partner’s experience & how our relationship's history is impacting our current relationship, Identifying unhelpful interaction cycles, Building new ways of communicating and responding, Whether you’ve been together one year or 50, relationship struggles can creep in and sabotage the connection you once felt. I can help you build a better relationship together. Couples counseling can help with a wide range of relationship concerns, including: Communication breakdowns or frequent conflict, Feeling emotionally disconnected or distant, Rebuilding trust after hurt, betrayal, or infidelity, Parenting disagreements and family stress, Anxiety, stress, or major life transitions affecting the relationship, Premarital counseling and relationship preparation

Who I Help Best

I work best with individuals and couples who are struggling with relationship issues. Therapy is not about deciding who is right or wrong—it’s about helping both partners feel seen, heard, and supported. Working with couples is challenging work, so it's important to choose someone like me, who specializes in couple's work. While it is recommended that both partners work together to resolve relationships issues, if your partner won’t come to couple’s therapy, you can come on your own. You can make changes to how you are showing up in the relationship that can impact the relationship for good.

What a First Session Is Like

Our first session is an opportunity for discovery. After I introduce myself, I'll explain some basics about what it takes to be successful together in counseling, and your best path forward to get the outcomes you want out of our sessions together. Then I'll ask you questions about your relationship, your history, and your goals so that I can assess your needs and make a plan for our future sessions. Finding the right counselor is a very personal decision. This first session is an opportunity for you to ask all the questions that you may have, and get a sense of who I am to know whether or not you feel understood and cared for in therapy.
