About Rhett

License #: #201264/TX | #0003051/CO

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and board certified executive coach (MDiv, MSMFT, LMFT, BCC,) with nearly three decades of experience at the intersection of faith, psychology, and human flourishing. Based in Frisco, TX, I specialize in anxiety treatment for individuals, couples, and families, using the Restoration Therapy model, EMDR, and contemplative approaches to help clients move beyond symptom management toward lasting relational healing. I am the co-founder of the Turning from Anxiety Intensive, a member of the RT Core Leadership Team, and co-host of the RT Dialogue podcast. I have trained therapists and leaders nationwide and speak regularly to audiences in ministry, corporate, and clinical settings. My executive coaching clients have included Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels, and Chick-fil-A. I am the author of The Anxious Christian and What It Means to Be a Man (Moody Publishers), and co-author of publications in partnership with Pepperdine University's Boone Center for the Family. I hold dual master's degrees — an MDiv and an MSMFT from Fuller Theological Seminary — and am licensed in both Texas and Colorado. I live in McKinney, TX with his family. When not in the office, you'll find me on the trails running ultramarathons or exploring the outdoors.

My Therapeutic Approach

My therapeutic approach is grounded in the Restoration Therapy (RT) model, developed by Dr. Terry and Sharon Hargrave, which focuses on understanding the deep relational pain — violations of love and trust — that drive anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and destructive patterns in relationships. Rather than simply managing symptoms, I helps clients identify the root causes of their pain and move toward lasting peace with themselves and others. I integrate EMDR for trauma processing, family systems theory (Bowenian), and contemplative approaches drawn from his pastoral and spiritual formation background. My work is attachment-informed and relationally focused, keeping the broader relational system — family of origin, marriage, significant relationships — in view throughout the therapeutic process. I works with the whole person — emotional, relational, spiritual, and psychological — and integrates faith into the therapeutic process when desired by the client. I work with Christians and non-Christians alike, approaching the therapy room as a safe, non-judgmental space for anyone regardless of belief. My clinical specialty is anxiety, which I understand not simply as a disorder to be managed but as a signal pointing to deeper relational wounds and unmet needs — and the path through it involves honest self-awareness, restored relationships, and growing capacity for a full and integrated life.

Who I Help Best

I work best with individuals, couples, and families who sense that something deeper is driving their anxiety, relational struggles, or stuck patterns — and who are ready to do honest, meaningful work to understand and change it. I am particularly effective with high-functioning anxious people — professionals and leaders who are performing well on the outside but privately struggling with worry, emotional reactivity, or a sense that something is off. They want more than symptom relief — they want to understand themselves. I work well with couples in crisis or stuck patterns — partners who love each other but keep having the same conflicts or feel emotionally disconnected. My intensive background makes me especially effective with couples who need to move faster than weekly therapy allows. I connect deeply with faith-oriented clients who want a therapist who understands that world from the inside — people who don't want their faith dismissed or pathologized in the therapy room. I also work with executives and leaders in ministry, nonprofit, and corporate environments who recognize that their internal emotional life is impacting their leadership and relationships. And I have a particular heart for men navigating identity and transitions — trying to figure out who they are and how to show up well at home and at work.

What a First Session Is Like

Our first session is an initial intake focused primarily on one question: is this a good fit for both of us? As your therapist, I want to know whether you feel a safe and trustworthy connection with me, and whether you believe I am equipped to help you with what you're carrying. And I'll be honest with you about whether I feel equipped and within my scope of practice to help you well. In that first session I'll create space for you to share what's bringing you in — whatever feels most pressing or painful. I won't rush you or reduce your story to a checklist. I'll listen for the deeper patterns underneath what you're describing, because in my experience what brings someone through the door is rarely the whole story. I'll also be transparent about what our work together might look like — the investment of time, energy, and finances involved, how frequently we might meet, and a realistic sense of how long the process could take. Some issues resolve in a handful of sessions. Others require months of sustained work. I'll be honest with you about which is more likely. By the end of our first session my goal is that you leave feeling heard, seen, and with a clearer sense of what it would look like to move forward — whether that's with me or with someone better suited to your needs.
