About Kristin
License #: DT83069I am a Registered Dietitian with a Christ-centered private practice specializing in working with individuals with eating disorders, disordered eating, emotional eating and a history of chronic dieting. I provide faith-integrated treatment for clients who are interested and who voice faith as a value of theirs. I have found that the foundational component of properly nourishing yourself is to first make peace with food. This involves letting go of rigid food rules and the diet mentality and learning how to trust your own internal hunger and fullness cues. I believe that part of good nutrition is enjoying your food and finding satisfaction in eating. I also believe that black and white thinking around food can lead to disordered eating. In my practice, I use a non-weight focused approach where I work with individuals on making healthy behavioral changes and letting their weight fall where it will while empowering clients to accept and embrace their unique bodies. Through my “all foods fit” motto, I assist individuals in incorporating intuitive eating into their every day life, help them to find types of movement that are both enjoyable and social and encourage them to embrace a Health at Every Size® concept. In my recently published book, Unworthy Weight, I address how to reclaim your worth from a number on a scale and find true identity in Christ.
My Therapeutic Approach
In my practice, I provide medical nutrition therapy using a non-diet approach where we focus not only on eating behaviors, but also underlying thoughts and emotions that might be driving certain eating patterns. I work with clients to help them separate food from feelings so that, together, we can work to ensure they are adequately fueling their bodies while processing through underling emotions with their therapist. Tools that clients have found to be helpful include support with menu planning, grocery shopping, individualized meal plans and skills for intuitive eating.
Who I Help Best
I work with both adults as well as adolescents who have eating disorders, disordered eating or simply want to improve their relationship with food and their bodies. I am a good fit for clients who are tired of chronic dieting and want to learn what it means to trust their body's internal hunger and fullness cues again!
What a First Session Is Like
During an initial assessment, clients will be asked a list of questions regarding their relationship with food/body, specific food concerns, medical history, typical day of eating, etc. This is an opportunity for me to learn more about each client's individual story and concerns as well an opportunity for clients to address any questions or concerns they may have for me about what to expect, the difference between a dietitian and a therapist, my approach, etc. At the end of the initial assessment, I ask clients what they hope to get out of working with me. Some will say that they would like to improve their relationship with food, learn how to properly nourish their body, experience decreased mental food noise, etc. In the follow-up session we work to jump into a typical day of eating and come up with a plan that addresses both the practical part of eating (what, when, how much, etc) as well as the underlying emotional component. This gives clients an opportunity to be working on specific assignments and skills in between sessions.
