About Sara
License #: 955I have been a therapist since I was a teenager though I did not have the proper training nor the maturity! I have always been someone who listened to others and noticed the emotional state they were in. When I got to college and started out majoring in pre-med I realized that was not for me. However, I remember specifically during the first one or 2 classes of Psychology 101 I was in love with it! Growing up in a rural area in the 80s, this was not something I ever really knew about. Fast forward to 2001, I was new to Nashville, and newly married. I was looking for a job but did not have the credentials for counseling and I knew I needed to go to graduate school. Trevecca Nazarene University had just started the process of credentialling with Marriage and Family Therapy. I remember the first day of graduate school and I was so excited! The rest is history!

My Therapeutic Approach
I have a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy but that does not necessarily mean I see couples and families. It is more about the systems we are in. You are a part of a family system and all that entails and if you are married or in a longterm relationship you are in that system. We are not individuals living on our own islands by ourselves. We are a part of a family, of a couple, of a cohort at school, a team member at work, etc. We are in relationships with others and there will always be issues or tough spots. This is what is so fascinating for me. My clients are individuals but we are talking about their parents when discussing their childhood or we are talking about their significant other and how they feel loved or annoyed by them. However, one of my favorite things to say to clients (and even to myself) is: When you are pointing your finger at your spouse, significant other, boss, teenager, etc, about their faults or misdoings, you have 3 fingers pointing at yourself. What are you doing in that situation with that person that has gotten you both here?
Who I Help Best
I enjoy working with adults both young adults and other adults in the various phases of life.
What a First Session Is Like
Usually in the first session I have a questionnaire that I like to start with because it gives me a lot of pieces of your puzzle. If something is really worked up in you then we can discuss that for the first session but most people are happy to let me "lead" that first session!
