About Veronica
License #: 1699I am a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 15 years of experience working with adults and older adults. I have worked in community mental health settings as well as now, private practice. I also worked as manager for an older adult program. I graduated from Pepperdine University with a master's degree in clinical psychology with an emphasis on marriage and family therapy. Additionally, I have received numerous trainings on counseling the older adult population as well as on grief and loss. I have supervised interns and led a program to train interns on counseling basics. I have a certificate in conflict management from Lipscomb University and trained to be a Rule 31 Mediator. I enjoy working with diverse populations and particularly the older adult population.
My Therapeutic Approach
Clients find me easy to talk with and non-judgmental. I present with warmth, curiosity, and focus. I am comfortable with those from a Christian background. While my approach to therapy is unique to each client, I used Solution-Focused and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies to understand and address the problem areas. Our work together extends beyond our weekly therapy appointments. You'll have activities between sessions to solidify what you're learning and to practice what was discussed during each session. I like to meet with my clients weekly, especially in the first month to establish a good relationship and develop clear goals. My goal is to help you gain the skills and confidence you desire and move toward “graduation” from therapy. Therapy doesn’t have to be long-term nor does it have to feel scary. It is work done to move you to a better place.
Who I Help Best
The reason I went into this field was to help those struggling with life's challenges to live a purposeful and enjoyable life. I enjoy working with men and women in the middle stages of life to navigate shifts and changes in their families, career, and their social life. I also enjoy working with those who've experienced a loss, whether recent or in the past to move through the grief process and find joy again.
What a First Session Is Like
The first session is an intake/assessment time. If this is your first time in therapy, I recognize that this may uncomfortable and even some hesitancy about your decision. However, I introduce you to therapy, get to know you as you get to know my style. Initially, I ask many questions to help me specifically tailor my work with you. The questions related to the reason you came to therapy, as well as your social, spiritual, and some physical health questions. My questions help me to see the whole person and not just the immediate concern. We create treatment goals to guide our subsequent sessions. Finally, we conclude with me checking in with you regarding your level of hopefulness and any questions or concerns.
