About Julia

License #: 2665

I am a Middle TN native, not quite native to Nashville but very close! I've lived in this region my entire life and completed my Bachelor's in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University and my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University. I believe everyone deserves a space where you can show up 100% authentically as you, where you're free from judgement or criticism. This is the type of space I try to create in my office, because I truly believe that change occurs only when we are safe enough to let our guards down and be completely honest about where we are. I'm not afraid of your tears, hard stories, tragic losses, or any emotion you may be experiencing. You are not "too much," "too emotional," or "too messy" for me to sit with. I am honored to be a witness to your story and grateful to help you find comfort and regulation, whatever your story is. I am a lover of people, plants, fiber arts (knit, crochet, embroidery and cross stitch) and visual arts (especially watercolor painting and photography!). With that said, I also offer outdoor sessions for those wanting to ground in nature. We don't always have to meet inside; this can almost feel cruel to do on days that the weather is incredible! With Centennial Park right outside my office door, this gives us an easy opportunity to go outside on beautiful days.

My Therapeutic Approach

I help people suffering with the anxieties of modern living. Our nervous systems are constantly overloaded by the pace of modern work, consumerism culture that feeds us infinite ways to "keep up with the Joneses," expectations to instantly "get over" grief and loss, all while rarely spending time in green spaces (as our ancestors did). This overstimulation creates a baseline of anxiety in our nervous systems in ways humanity has never previously experienced. I use Polyvagal Theory to help clients understand what is happening in their bodies and give practical coping skills to increase regulation and calm. We will identify your unique triggers into stress and glimmers into peace. I also use an attachment-based theory called Emotionally Focused Therapy to better understand and tend to the emotional side of your nervous system. We will look at your attachment history from birth to now to bring understanding to how your triggers affect your body and emotions. This also helps us see where hurt is sneakily lying in your body so we can bring comfort and regulation to these places of hurt.

Who I Help Best

I work best with adults who feel stressed in modern life. This stress can show up in a variety of places and can look like many things. Some of my clients are young professionals feeling stuck and overwhelmed in a season they expected to feel comfortable, like they "made it to the finish line." Other clients of mine are experiencing a loss (of a loved one, a beloved pet, a job loss, etc.) and feel pressured to return to "normal" (while their bodies know this expectation is unrealistic). Still other clients are experiencing life transitions like welcoming their first child, starting a second career, or have just moved to Nashville and are building new community around these changes. All of these life events create stress in our bodies and I am here to help you find comfort and safety again.

What a First Session Is Like

In our first session I will ask questions about what makes this season the right one to be in therapy. I will set some ground rules and expectations, and remind you that you have so much power in this space! You will have the opportunity to ask me questions about myself, my practice, and how I approach my therapy work. This session is meant to be relaxed, there's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with! I'm not asking for your deepest, darkest, most hurtful secrets. We will have plenty of time for this later! This first session is meant as a bit of an introduction where I get to know you more, and you have the opportunity to see if I feel like a safe place for you to do this work. We will start with general questions about who you are, what brought you to me, what you want out of the process of therapy, and specific goals you want to accomplish in therapy. I will begin gathering information about your family and attachment history, coping skills you use today and what is/isn't working, what your social support system looks like, and questions about your physical life (eating habits, physical movement habits, energy levels, etc.). This gives me a general idea of what resources you have access to and a bird's-eye view of who you are. This session should also give us both more clarity about therapeutic fit. If at any time you notice we are not a good fit, please let me know! In this case, I will help you find a better therapist fit. So excited to meet you!
