About Susan
License #: 2405Welcome! I’m Susan Martin, a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified neuropsychotherapist with advanced training in trauma-informed, brain-based therapy. I work with adults who appear “high-functioning” on the outside yet feel chronically overwhelmed, emotionally disconnected, anxious, or exhausted on the inside. Many of my clients are professionals, caregivers, or helpers who have spent years pushing through stress, performing well, and taking care of others—often at the expense of themselves. My background includes extensive experience treating trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, nervous system dysregulation, and relational wounds. I specialize in working with clients who understand their struggles intellectually but feel stuck when it comes to emotional relief or lasting change. Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and paced uniquely to your nervous system. Clients often describe my style as grounding, attuned, and practical. I value creating a space where you don’t have to perform, explain yourself perfectly, or “have it all together.” Together, we focus on helping your body and brain feel safer so healing can happen naturally and sustainably.

My Therapeutic Approach
My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, nervous-system-focused, and grounded in neuroscience. I integrate Brainspotting, somatic therapy, attachment-based work, and parts-informed approaches to help clients process trauma stored in the body rather than relying solely on talk therapy. This is especially effective for clients experiencing anxiety, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, chronic stress, or symptoms that don’t improve with insight alone. Brainspotting allows us to access and process deep emotional material without requiring you to relive events or find the “right words.” We work with your brain’s natural capacity to heal, gently releasing patterns of overwhelm, self-criticism, and survival responses. Sessions are guided by attunement, choice, and respect for your pace. Rather than focusing on quick fixes, my work supports long-term nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and improved relationships. The goal is not just symptom reduction, but helping you feel more grounded, present, confident, and connected in your daily life.
Who I Help Best
I work best with adults—especially women—who are high-achieving, responsible, and emotionally insightful, yet struggle with anxiety, burnout, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or feeling disconnected from themselves. Many of my clients have a history of trauma (including complex or developmental trauma), emotionally unavailable relationships, or chronic stress that has accumulated over time. You may feel “on edge” even when things are going well, have difficulty relaxing, struggle to trust yourself, or feel stuck despite years of personal growth or therapy. Some clients experience physical symptoms such as tension, fatigue, sleep disruption, or emotional numbness. Others feel overwhelmed by emotions they can’t quite access or control. If you’re tired of managing symptoms and ready to address the root causes stored in your nervous system—at a pace that feels safe and respectful—this work may be a good fit.
What a First Session Is Like
The first session is focused on creating safety, clarity, and connection. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy now, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping will change. I’ll ask questions about your current symptoms, stressors, and life context, while also paying close attention to how your nervous system responds in the moment. There is no pressure to share everything or dive into trauma right away. We move at a pace that feels manageable, with plenty of grounding and choice. I’ll explain how Brainspotting and nervous-system-based therapy work so you understand what to expect and feel empowered in the process. Most clients leave the first session feeling understood, calmer, and more hopeful. The goal is for you to feel supported, not overwhelmed—and to begin building a therapeutic relationship where healing can unfold safely and effectively.
