About Portia
License #: PS020371Hi, I’m Dr. Portia Van Sant. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of the Center for CBT & Therapeutic Healing. I believe people are experts in their lived experiences and emotional difficulties. I support my clients in becoming their own ‘therapist’ by teaching recognition and restructuring of unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. In therapy, I help clients gradually confront their fears and gain their confidence back.

My Therapeutic Approach
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of structured and goal oriented therapy that focuses on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Unhelpful and untrue thoughts about ourselves or situations can lead to distress. I use CBT to help clients identify and restructure unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that clients may have about themselves, others, or the world. Clients learning CBT will gain new coping strategies to handle distressing situations. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a type of CBT used to treat OCD and phobias. Individuals with OCD and phobias will often avoid the situations that scare them or do compulsions to lessen the anxiety. The two main components of ERP are: gradually confronting your fears and limiting compulsions + avoidance. I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)& exposure and response prevention (ERP) to help with: Worries that are difficult to control, unwanted thoughts that are challenging to get rid of, repetitive behaviors that you feel like you need to do in order to reduce anxiety, and avoidance of feared situations (i.e. public speaking, doctors appointments, driving, new social settings, etc.). We will work together to make a therapeutic plan that feels right for you.
Who I Help Best
Does it feel like you are spending your days worrying and not enjoying your life? Are you missing out on spending time with your loved ones, your hobbies, or struggling at work/school due to your worrying? Are you stuck in a pattern of being overwhelmed by the future and overanalyzing the past? I help clients break out of cycles of worry, get back to doing the things they love, and be more comfortable with the surprises life brings.
What a First Session Is Like
I work with clients who are struggling with OCD and anxiety disorders. During our initial sessions, we will work together to better understand the symptoms of your anxiety, and collaborate to make a plan to gradually confront your fears and better understand the root cause. Most of my clients notice a gradual lifting of symptoms within the first few months and continued improvement with sessions.
