About Scott

License #: APC002503

I’m Scott, a therapist and founder of Within Mental Health. Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than twenty years working in technology, design, and leadership, an experience that continues to shape my understanding of work, identity, relationships, burnout, and the many ways our lives change over time. Much of my work centers on people who find themselves at important turning points. Sometimes that means entering adulthood and trying to figure out who you are, what matters to you, and what kind of life you want to build. Other times, it means reaching a point later in life when the career, relationships, roles, or identity you've built no longer feel like they fit in the same way. I believe therapy can be a place to slow down, make sense of what’s happening, and explore the questions that don’t always have simple answers. My goal is to create a thoughtful, collaborative space where you can better understand yourself, reconnect with what matters, and begin moving toward a life that feels more genuinely your own.

My Therapeutic Approach

My approach to therapy is collaborative, curious, and grounded in the belief that you are more than a problem to solve or a diagnosis to manage. I work primarily from an existential perspective, which means we may explore questions of identity, meaning, relationships, responsibility, uncertainty, and what it means to build a life that feels genuinely your own. I also draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, narrative, attachment-informed, and other evidence-based approaches depending on what is most helpful to you. Sometimes our work will involve understanding patterns and experiences that have shaped you. Sometimes it will mean sitting with uncertainty, experimenting with new ways of responding, or taking practical steps toward change. I don't see my role as handing you answers or telling you how to live your life. Instead, we'll work together to better understand what is happening, clarify what matters, and find ways of moving forward that feel intentional, meaningful, and possible.

Who I Help Best

I work best with thoughtful adults who find themselves at a crossroads. You may be entering adulthood and trying to figure out who you are, where you belong, and what kind of life you want to build. Or you may be further along in life and realizing that the career, relationships, roles, or version of yourself that once fit no longer feel quite right. These experiences often show up as anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship struggles, career uncertainty, or simply feeling stuck. You may have done a lot of thinking about yourself already, but insight alone hasn't helped you figure out what comes next. My work is especially suited to people who are curious about themselves and willing to engage honestly with the questions beneath the surface. Together, we'll make sense of what's changing, explore the patterns and expectations that have shaped your life, and work toward greater clarity about who you are becoming and how you want to live.

What a First Session Is Like

Our first session is a chance to get to know each other and begin making sense of what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about what’s been happening in your life, what feels difficult or unsettled right now, and what you’re hoping might be different. I’ll likely ask about some of the experiences, relationships, and patterns that have shaped you, but there’s no expectation that you arrive with everything figured out or tell your entire life story in an hour. I also want to understand what you’re looking for from therapy and what has or hasn’t been helpful in the past. You’re welcome to ask questions, bring up concerns, or tell me when something doesn’t quite fit. Therapy works best when it’s something we’re building together. By the end of our first session, my hope is that you have a better sense of how I work, that I have a beginning understanding of you and what matters most right now, and that we have some direction for where our work might go. We don’t need to have everything mapped out. We’ll start with what brings you here, pay attention to what emerges, and we’ll go from there.
